How to Talk to Strangers

January 15th, 2009 7 Comments

In my daily trolling through my RSS feeds (which, for older generations, is the equivalent of daily reading the newspaper with the exception that you choose the subjects and source from which it comes) I was fascinated as I read all about how to talk to strangers. The author …

I love birthday parties. The kids, the chaos, the decorating, the cake, the pure joy of it all.  And I love it when they all go home and I can crash on the sofa and say, “It was good”.

For Isaiah’s 7th …

I don’t know about you guys, but taking a family picture is a big deal for us. Just getting three kids all looking the same direction with a somewhat acceptable expression on their face is a complete impossibility! I can so distinctly remember myself as a 7 year old boy …

What do little girls want for their birthday?  When asked, Elanor declared that it must have “balloons, cake and pink”.  Pink what?  Pink everything…and a little bit of princess to go with it.  So Mommy started planning early this time around so she wouldn’t be up until midnight the night before.

We sent the invitations, we found the princess dress, we bought pink snacks and pink punch, we found pink fabric to decorate the tables and chairs, we found pink and white balloons to hang around the room and we raided the windows, closets, and beds to make a royal tent for Princess Ela, Princess Mari, and Princess Sarah to have their party in.

When the little girls arrived they received tiaras, wands and necklaces to complete their costumes and ate their pink snacks in the princess tent while the boys made crowns to be their princes.  With three year old girls, we kept it simple.  After tea time was over, we headed outside to blow bubbles.  As the bubbles were winding down, Daniel and I snuck inside to bring out the Castle Cake bedecked with marshmallows and towers. We sang Happy Birthday and Elanor blew out her candle and then we all headed back inside to open shiny pink packages, which Ian pronounced were “what Ela always dreamed about”.  As I cleared away the debris, Daniel served the cake and then we let the girls play with pink glitter play doh while the boys snuck away to watch the Sword and the Stone.  Wait a minute, Elanor is in there too :)

All in all, it was a fun party.  I loved the tent.  Daniel loved the Red Velvet Cake.  And Elanor loved having a Birthday.  We love you Elanor!  Thanks to all her friends who shared in this special day.  You helped make it a day we will all remember.
