China Travel Logs July 20, 2006 I had the unexpected opportunity to take a short backpacking trip through China with one of my favorite people in the world last week. Nic Price has studied Chinese in China and was back for a 2 month visit with his brother in Shanghai. Being so close to one another on this side of the world it was too good of an opportunity to pass up getting together and having an adventure.  I know most of you are mainly interested in the photos so my plan is to make numerous short entries over the coming weeks about the highlights of the trip. Tonight I will give the overview of the trip and point you to the slideshow. We flew from Manila to Hong Kong, took Hong Kong trains to the China border where we crossed on foot and boarded an overnight train to Guilin China. From there we took bus and river boat the remaining 70 KM down the Li river to Yangshuo which was our destination. Yangshuo is quickly turning from a sleepy village in the midst of China's infamous karst peaks (mountains shaped like giant gun drops sticking straight up out of the ground) to a haven for backpackers and budget minded travelers looking to experience rural China. We had a wonderful time, took about 1000 photos between us, and had some great experiences. The only problem was the trip was too short. I can't wait for the kids to get a little older and we can try and same trip as a family. Enjoy the photos and I will share more in the days to come.
